Chapter Nine

“I could smell the bullshit wafting off you two in waves,” Mr. Mills snapped.

“How did you find us?” Stacy interrupted.

“Stacy, my dear, do you know what I love most about you?” She shook her head, feeling like a scolded child. “You’re so organized. Some might say too organized. You put Mr. Walker’s address in your calendar, which is synced to mine.”

“Fucking amateur,” Owen grumbled.

“At first, I thought, it’s an address—no big deal, until I saw the string of heart emojis. Something was clearly amiss.”

“Not amiss,” someone mumbled from the background.

“I did some investigating and—”

“Okay, Stabler!” Nelson shouted from the porch.

“Who?” Mr. Mills questioned with a pinched expression on his face. He didn’t know who the young woman was, but he preferred she minded her business.

“Chile…never mind.”

Stacy thought it was time to put up or shut up before her father got the Nelson Treatment.

“Jamil, can you please come here?” Stacy called, refusing to take her eyes off her father.

“Good luck, bro,” Jalen whispered to Jamil before shoving him off the porch. He slowly approached the new arrivals hesitantly because his insecurities were getting the better of him. Stacy lied to most of her family about her visit, meaning she lied about him.

But why?

Stacy linked her fingers through Jamil’s as soon as he was beside her and squeezed his hand for support.

“Dad? Mom? This is my boyfriend, Jamil Walker.”

“Boyfr-” her family started before they were interrupted by Stacy.

“Shut up. Let me finish. A year ago, we met on a mail-order groom app. We’ve been engaged in a long-distance relationship ever since; however, due to our pressing responsibilities and my inability to prioritize my happiness over pleasing you, we are meeting for the first time. I shouldn’t have lied, but I also shouldn’t have been made to feel that I couldn’t be honest.” Stacy paused to address Jamil. She chewed her bottom lip nervously, hoping she didn’t give him the wrong impression. “I hadn’t told my family about you, but it wasn’t because I was ashamed of you. I wanted to be sure our relationship was moving forward, and the first step was meeting in person. I love you.”

Stacy panted, ending her public declaration of love, and waited for the fireworks. Everyone remained silent, awaiting Mr. Mill’s rebuttal; however, Mindy beat him to the punch.

“Are you serious?” Mindy asked, handing her son to their mother. “Please tell me you’re joking. You’ve been online dating some farmer for a year?” The vein in Stacy’s forehead throbbed at how her sister spat out the words ‘some farmer’ venomously. “You can’t be that desperate, Sta—”

The Walkers and Stacy’s friends carried on in the background, hooting, hollering, and clapping their hands when Stacy reared back and punched her disrespectful sister in the face, knocking her out cold. Stacy grinned as she shook her hand out, satisfied with her handiwork.

“Stacy! How could you?” Mrs. Mills gasped once she realized her youngest daughter wasn’t coming to.

“She shouldn’t have been talking shit,” Stacy replied, still pumped up on adrenaline. Jamil remained silent, still processing that his sweet, lovable girlfriend cold-cocked her sister.
